Foreign Direct Investments (According to BPM6 methodology)
With the changeover to international methodological standards for foreign direct investment, data compiled on the basis of the new methodology are also published on the MNB’s website going back to 2013. At the same time, data compiled on the basis of the old methodology up to 2013 continue to be available in unchanged from here. The long time series data, compiled on the basis of the new methodology, were published on 23 September 2014, at the time 2013 annual data were published.
Under the new methodology, the asset/liability breakdown is the primary method in the standard presentation; however, as supplementary information data are also published in a breakdown according to the direction of investment. In the case of fellow enterprises, it is the resident or non-resident status of the ultimate investor that decides the direction of investment for which their assets and liabilities should be recorded.
In Hungary, the MNB has been compiling data including special purpose entities (SPEs) as well as data excluding SPEs since January 2006, in order to eliminate the distorting effect of SPE data.
Since September 2012, transactions within international corporate groups have been identified which pass through the economy without having an impact on it, but such transactions occur at (normal) companies that cannot be classified into special purpose entities due to their ownership structure. These flows are called capital in transit. Transactions related restructuring of multinational companies’ asset portfolios are also treated separately, as these do not actually represent new funding or an outflow of funds. Data adjusted for capital in transit and restructuring of asset portfolios on an aggregate basis, as well as in a breakdown by country and activity are shown in a separate table.
From September 2016, the MNB compiles and publishes an additional breakdown of inward FDI positions by the country of Ultimate Investor as well. In the future these supplementary annual statistics will be published in September with a timeliness of T+21 months. The first reference year is 2014 for which this breakdown is available. The data can be found on this page among the statistical tables presenting annual FDI stock data broken down by country and activity.
