On 19 January 2007 the Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued a cupronickel collector coin “Libelle aeroplane” with a face value of HUF 1,000 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of the mechanical engineer János Adorján, the pioneer of aviation in Hungary. The collector coin was issued as a continuation of the series presenting the technical innovations and inventions of Hungarian engineers and inventors.
On the obverse of the collector coin the engine and part of the propeller of the Libelle aeroplane designed by Adorján are depicted, while on the reverse there is the aeroplane itself with the legend “JÁNOS ADORJÁN, DESIGNER OF THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL HUNGARIAN AEROPLANE”.
The coin was designed by Balázs Bitó.
The coin is made of an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighs 14 grams, is 28.43 mm x 28.43 mm, and has a smooth edge.
20,000 coins may be struck, of which 10,000 are produced by the special “proof” technology.
The coin may be purchased from the Hungarian Mint Ltd. (Budapest, Könyves Kálmán körút 38) or from the shop in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank’s Visitor Centre (Budapest, Szabadság tér 8/9). The coin is available at face value for three months from its date of issue.
