The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing a gold collector coin with a face value of HUF 5,000 to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games. The gold collector coin, designed by Andrea Horváth, will be issued as part of the ‘Smallest Gold Coin in the World’ collector programme.
The collector coin issued to commemorate the London 2012 Olympics feature flat water kayak-canoe, one of the most successful sports for Hungary in recent history. On the obverse, the circular legend ‘MAGYARORSZÁG’ (HUNGARY) is inscribed around the upper rim of the coin. The centre of the coin bears a representation of the blade of a kayak paddle as it reaches the surface of water casting curved waves. To the right of the representation of the kayak paddle, the value numeral ‘5000’, the inscription ‘FORINT’, the mintmark ‘BP.’ and the mint year ‘2012’ are arranged in horizontal lines below each other.
A man paddling a canoe is depicted in the centre of the reverse side of the collector coin. To the left of the paddling canoeist, the inscriptions ‘XXX’, ‘NYÁRI’ (SUMMER), ‘OLIMPIAI’ (OLYMPIC) and ‘JÁTÉKOK’ (GAMES) appear in horizontal lines below each other. The initials of designer Andrea Horváth feature on the rim of the coin, below the inscription.
The gold collector coin is struck in .999 fine gold. It weighs 0.5 gram and it is 11 mm in diameter and has a smooth edge.
The mintage limit of the gold collector coins is 10,000 pieces in proof finish.
The collector coins are sold by the Hungarian Mint. They are available to buy at the coin shop of the Hungarian Mint in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank’s Visitor Centre (8–9 Szabadság tér, Budapest) and on the Mint’s website (www.penzvero.hu), where a number of collector coins produced from gold, silver and non-ferrous metals issued earlier are also on sale.
