Following public consultation on the agenda, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank has finalised its commemorative coin issuance programme for 2019. Next year, the Bank plans to issue a total of 17 commemorative coins in ten separate topics, continuing four earlier series and launching two new, popular series. The programme contains one gold, six silver, three stand-alone non-ferrous metal coins as well as the non-ferrous metal versions of the precious metal coins to be issued.

Using the opportunity to vote on one of the leading news portals, more than 16,000 (33% more than last year) votes were posted on the announced themes in the public consultation on the Bank’s coin issuance programme for 2019. In addition, a number of themes were proposed by those interested in the realm of collector coins.

The composition and implementation of the coin issuance programme for 2019, which also builds on the consultation results, is guaranteed to be diverse.  The earlier popular collector coin series, for example, those presenting the Saints of the House of Árpád, outstanding Hungarian painters, inventions of domestic scientists and inventors and Hungary’s national memorial sites, will continue. Furthermore, illustrious anniversaries in the history of art and science will provide good opportunities for new issuances.

The MNB plans to launch two new collector coin series in 2019 designed to present characteristic Hungarian animal and plant species and introduce Hungarian geographers and folk researchers.

Two coins of special shape will enrich the programme, as the Bank plans to issue square and rectangle shaped coins, in addition to the normal circular coins; they will commemorate Kálmán Kandó and Hungary’s oldest scientific institution in operation to this day.

The MNB’s commemorative coin issuance programme for 2019 is summarised in the table below:

Consistent with its sales policy adopted in 2014, the Bank will also issue the HUF 2,000 denomination non-ferrous metal version of all precious metal collector coins. This version not only expands the choice of coins, but, due to its favourable price, it also promotes the coins’ value transferring and educational role as widely as possible.

The MNB reserves the right to change any aspects of the programme. The final data will be determined by the Decrees of the Governor of the MNB to be published in the Hungarian Gazette.

Several proposals were received during the consultation which, although could not fit into next year’s issuance programme due to its tight schedule, later they could become potential themes for future coins: classical Hungarian fables and the Hungarian counties as new series; commemorating the Martyrs of Arad, the only Hungarian astronaut to participate in a space voyage and Ödön Széchenyi, organiser of the state fire brigade; a continuation of the series presenting the masterpieces of church architecture with the Abbey of Tihany and the Church of Ják; and a future event, the World Hunting Expo, to be organised by Hungary in 2021.
