If the planned forint banknote or coin reproduction does not satisfy the requirements applicable to reproductions not requiring the MNB’s authorisation, or if there is any uncertainty regarding this, authorisation by the MNB – issued in its capacity as a public authority – must be requested for the production thereof.

The obligation to obtain authorisation applies to both the production and the actual use (e.g. distribution) of forint banknote or coin reproductions.

In addition, MNB authorisation is required for the reproduction of commemorative coins or commemorative versions of circulation coins, whether in circulation or withdrawn and still exchangeable for legal tender – regardless of the size, material composition or unique graphic elements of the reproduction – within 20 years from the issuance of the respective coin.

The application for authorisation must be submitted by the user of the reproduction (the person ordering the production, or if the reproduction is used by its actual producer, then the producer thereof) based on the application form “Application for the production of forint coin replicas” specified in Annex 3 to MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.) in the case of coin reproductions and the application form “Application for the production of forint banknote replicas” in Annex 1 to MNB Decree 43/2024. (IX. 19) in the case of banknote reproductions. The graphic design or image of the forint banknote or coin, as well as the declaration specified in Article 59 (2) of Act CXXXIX of 2013 on the Magyar Nemzeti Bank must be attached.
