Metallic reproductions of forint circulation coins that are in circulation or have been withdrawn but are still exchangeable for legal tender (exchangeable) may be produced without authorisation by the MNB if
a) they do not include the name of the currency (“forint”) or its Hungarian or foreign language abbreviation used in practice, and
b) the size is outside the reference range specified in MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.) on coin reproductions, or
c) the size is within the reference range specified in MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.) on coin reproductions, provided that,
ca) the composition differs from that specified in Annex 1 of MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.) on coin reproductions for the permissible diameter range, and
cb) the combinations of the diameter and edge height are consistently outside the ranges specified in Annex 1 of MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.) on coin reproductions.
Metallic reproductions of collector coins in circulation or exchangeable may be produced without the MNB’s authorisation from 20 years after its original issue, provided that the production of such reproduction collector coins is not prohibited pursuant to Article 3 of MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.) on coin reproductions.
Withdrawn forint coins that are no longer exchangeable for legal tender may be produced without authorisation by the MNB if
a) they are made from precious metal and contain the inscription "utánzat" (replica) or an abbreviation clearly indicating its nature as replica
b) they are made from other metal materials not classified as precious metals and includes the inscription “utánzat” (replica) or an abbreviation clearly indicating their nature as a replica and they differ in size and composition from the original forint coin.
Users of such reproductions are required to provide the MNB with a data report containing the information specified in Annex 2 of MNB Decree 42/2024. (IX. 19.). This report must be submitted at least five working days prior to production of the reproduction, by sending an email to utanzat@mnb.hu.
No permission is required by the MNB for
a) non-metallic reproductions of forint coins provided that they cannot be mistaken for an actual forint coin or do not resemble the visual appearance;
b) forint coin reproductions made for illustration purposes out of paper or other non-metallic substances, and
c) reproductions of forint coins made available through electronic means, on an Internet website, by a wire-based or wireless device.
In cases where someone wishes to produce a forint coin reproduction that deviates from the conditions for freely reproducible items, authorisation from the MNB must be obtained. The authorisation process is free of charge. More information on the authorisation process can be found here >>>>
