Magyar Nemzeti Bank bids farewell to Alexandre Lamfalussy

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank and the European financial community mourn the death of an exceptionally talented man. Alexandre Lamfalussy’s life work has made a profound impact on the European economy. His pioneering efforts to foster cooperation among the world’s central banks, establish a single European monetary policy and introduce a common currency deservedly make his memory unforgettable. The MNB has lost one its own with the death of Alexandre Lamfalussy.

Alexandre Lamfalussy was one of the most outstanding figures of international finance, earning respect for his far-reaching activities and achievements around the world. He was simultaneously an economist, a banker, an academician, a father of four, a refugee, a European, a Hungarian and a Belgian.

Alexandre Lamfalussy was one of the first true European citizens, who worked to establish a unified Europe throughout his life. The death of Alexandre Lamfalussy marks the end of a rich life and an exemplary life work.

The Magyar Nemzeti Bank had already paid its respect to Alexandre Lamfalussy in his lifetime: the Lamfalussy Award, established by the MNB in 2013, as well as the Lamfalussy Conference Series, organised for the first time in 2014, present and reward internationally outstanding professional achievements that are deemed worthy of the person after whom the Award has been named and his memory

The primary objective of the MNB shall be to achieve and maintain price stability. (...) Without prejudice to its primary objective, the MNB shall support the maintenance of the stability of the system of financial intermediation, the enhancement of its resilience, its sustainable contribution to economic growth; furthermore, the MNB shall support the government’s economic policy and its policy related to environmental sustainability, using instruments at its disposal.
